sacred day one hundred eighty-five

southern watermelon.
7.4.2011

a fourth tradition for many: watermelon and fireworks. this year's feast was coupled with fireworks in great quantity spanning an hour-long presentation atop the old family place where i knew my papaw best.  he died the day after his 83rd birthday back in december.  this day we set off firecrackers with everyone around. he would have been proud.  watermelon was always around at these sort of family gatherings. of course we were eating these slices, juice running down our arms, with great laugher and stories.  sacred storytelling.  sacred time with sacred food.
