tree study.
11.9.2010as i work on my new carvings, i'm paying particular attention to tree's bark. i look at the variations in their trunks and i sometimes make mental notes, sketch a line or two, or take a photo. as a part of my walk to pick up the boy across from the studio, i stopped and snapped images of lovely trunks that are significant. their significance is through the many, many times i've walked past them in the over 10 years of moving in and out of this space. the church school he attends was the first church i visited in richmond, located a block and a half from where i use to live. i'd attend the early service and slip out. i never knew this community, these trees would come to mean so much to me. memory can be a creative act whether haunted or blessed.
