sacred day sixty-eight

king cake.
3.8.2011

there's a rhythm to entering lent. over pancakes, i look to the king cake to set the stage the day before ash wednesday. memories encircle this cake, from french class in high school to my dearest of friends.  cakes brought to RVA from new orleans and shipped by a loving mama from Mobile, AL.  my deep south roots come into the image, and those roots touch the sacred soil of love and care for each of my days.  as i stand in a line to purchase this dear treat surrounded by amazing spirits with sounds and smells of the roots of home, i am in the presence of something very true, something very real.
